Guide: Should You Buy or Build a Home?

It’s a question I hear a lot: buy something that already exists, or build from the ground up? There’s no universal right answer, but there is a right answer for you.

Buying an existing home usually means moving faster, negotiating on price, and knowing exactly what you’re getting — inspection reports and all. In today’s South Florida market, inventory has loosened up in a lot of areas, which gives buyers more room to negotiate than they’ve had in years.

Building gets you exactly what you want: the layout, the finishes, hurricane-impact windows, energy efficiency, lower maintenance down the road. The tradeoff is time and cost — permits, labor, and material prices in Florida have all pushed construction budgets higher, and timelines can stretch further than people expect.

If you want to move soon and keep your options open, buying is usually the smarter play. If you’re set on a specific vision and plan to stay long term, building can still make sense.
